Chapter Seven
Amy had forgotten about the incident with Bruno. At least, she had until sheâd found herself facing Nick with Pete sandwiched between them a few minutes ago. With the memory taunting her while she helped the girls with their clothes, she had to admit it wasnât one that she really wanted to recall. Not when she was trying so hard to keep any feelings she had toward him in perspective.
The memory was there, anyway. It was one of those that had faded down to little more than a few disquieting images for her, but it was apparent Nick had some recollection of it, too, since heâd asked the name of the dog. The only thing that had saved her from feeling uneasy with him all over again was knowing that his memories had to be far more benign than hers.
He couldnât possibly know that what sheâd remembered most was how rigid his expression had gone when heâd looked from her face to the front of her shirt. Or how something hot and liquid had stirred deep inside her at the look in his eyes in the moments before heâd glanced away and pointed out that he could see right through the fabric.
She couldnât recall exactly what heâd said. She just remembered feeling more embarrassed than she ever had in her life. Sheâd eventually realized that Nick had only mentioned her shirt to save her further embarrassment should she encounter anyone else. She knew, too, that the incident had meant nothing to him, because that weekend he continued to treat her as he always had. But after the worst of her distress had died, the memory of how heâd looked at her had come back to haunt her. And every time sheâd thought of how his eyes had darkened before heâd looked away, her flesh would grow warm and she would find herself wishing she could know the feel of his mouth and his hands on her body.
She really didnât know what it was she would feel. Sheâd been kissed by only two boys at that point in her life. One whoâd bruised her lip with his braces and one whoâd lost interest when he discovered she wasnât interested in getting naked. With them, sheâd never even come close to feeling anything like the sensations that had pooled inside her at the mere thought of Nickâs touch.
The feeling had been powerful, confusing, and it had filled her with a need for him that left her aching, empty and riddled with guilt because sheâd known feeling that way toward Nick was wrong. Wrong because even if he hadnât thought of her as a child, even if she could somehow have interested him, he was engaged to marry her sister.
So sheâd buried the feeling. Learned to repress it. Much the way sheâd repressed the urge to run in the house years earlier, because little ladies didnât run in her motherâs house. Or the way sheâd restrained herself from whistling, because little ladies didnât do that, either.
